KARLA BIDI
This is Karla Bidi (meaning Fire Trail), a beacon of light, a campfire, an invitation. Karla Bidi is our way of letting you know that we are here, that you are welcome and that this festival is for you. We invite you to explore the trail of beacons lining the Derbarl Yerrigan – from the hills in Guildford all the way to the sea in Walyalup.
Karla Bidi is a series of single large-scale sculptures placed along the Derbarl Yerrigan. Each sculpture is accompanied by a hypnotic soundscape that draws you in and invites you to take a moment to pause, to imagine and to contemplate.
Lighting fires along the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan is a practice that has existed for many years and had many purposes – welcoming people to Country, providing light, safety and warmth. We hope that our beacons provoke these feelings for you. We wanted to bring the Festival to you, to a place that you already visit and in a way that doesn’t require a ticket. We also wanted to pay homage to this place, and the Derbarl Yerrigan, which are both deeply important to Noongar people but are also shared by many.
